Now we all want to see multinationals pay their fair share of tax, but we also need them employing our people too. Drive them overseas, and then you'll be complaining the government doesn't attract enough businesses to create jobs.

Also, our economy would be absolutely shagged without a consumption tax such as the GST, would be completely fine with it being raised. The 'rich' will still contribute more as they spend more, its the most equitable system available.

There is not much equitable about a GST or most other forms of taxation.
The best fix IMO is a financial transactions tax of say 2% on every transaction and abolish all or most other taxes.
With cash on the way out and electronic transactions becoming the norm this would pick up almost all of the black economy as well and be the most equitable. Also simple and save heaps of paperwork.
