I think the measure is a massive and callous abrogation of responsibility.

It follows a pattern of behaviour that is pursued for political reasons, as it resonates with a certain segment of the Australian population (as illustrated by some posters here on HC).

Let's see:

Terrorists bred and raised on Australian soil - left to languish in overseas refugee camps rather than being repatriated, for fear of what they might do in Australia when they come back to their nation of birth. Let Iraq, Afghanistan and Turkey deal with our problem - they are much better equipped to deal with these individuals (and the terrorist acts they may or may not commit in future) than the Australian justice system.

New Zealand citizens who were raised, lived and have their families in Australia most of their lives and who commit a serious crime - sent back to New Zealand without any family support system - New Zealand is much better equipped to deal with these criminals than the Australian nation.

Australian citizens stranded in the USA, France, the UK India during a pandemic - threatened with jail if they return to their country of citizenship - apparently the Indian health system is much better equipped to deal with any infected Australian citizens than we can possibly do here on Australian soil.

It is not as if the pandemic began yesterday. It has been raging worldwide for over a year. The promise to return Australian citizens by Christmas (2020!) was the right promise to make. The lack of follow-through (to this day) in terms of making it happen is now used as an excuse that to protect the broader Australian populationAustralian citizens from India must not be allowed to return.... and the live and livelihoods of Australian citizens in India are collectively dropped into the "too hard" basket.

.... for we are one and free!!!

I suspect that there's a strong political motive for the federal government to continue shirking it's responsibility in the quarantine and border control area

they want to be seen to be in control ---------- BUT, not if they have to actually do something that might harm them politically

so - build and man remote quarantine stations????????

no no no no no - because - if it stuffs up -- it's then clear that it's Federal responsibility and they have made mistakes

let the states wear that responsibility and risk -

but, bung on some hard nosed rules that can't stuff up - but, make you look like you're in charge - like - lock your citizens in - and , stop the citizens coming from India or else jail -

well - that's a win for government

unfortunately - it's not a win for a solid democracy and freedom

it's actually very close to USSR stuff of the worst kind

but ---------- that's Liberals ----------------- the do nothing party - but, make it look like you are doing something
