It is an appropriate time to have a referendum to cut constitutional ties with the monarchy, assuming one is required.
Before a Prince of the blood brings disgrace on the institution seems to me an ideal time. It's time has passed anyway. What we need is a President with the same functions and powers as the Governor General.
It won't hurt the PM to be the one to move on this quickly.
