Why is it faux rage? It was a cheap election stunt to try to scare voters into voting Lib, just like Howard's Tampa moment. It didn't work because thankfully most Australians easily saw through it this time.
If best thing you can say to defend it was that it was technically legal, you should stop and think about why that is.
