The dry up of the Mediterranean Sea. The current thinking is that the dry up couldn't have caused the ice ages because there is not nearly enough water in the Med to account for all the ice. They make the assumption that the input from the Atlantic Ocean closing cut off the current necessary to keep the Med supplied with water to replace the evaporation of the Med water. IMO this did not happen. There is another explanation that does not require Gibraltar to close. I am doing a write up re this process. This will take a few more days or more depending on the time I have to devote to it.
BTW I am a geologist (retired)
