Maybe it is manipulation but I admit to not being a fan of conspiracy theories. My take on the sp drop is that some traders bought in for this announcement (or some long termers bought some "trading stock") and "sold the announcement". This would have been a predetermined strategy, win or lose.
The buying associated with this may be the reason we had a couple of spikes in the sp recently.
Imo the gold story is irrelevant in the short term but may be important medium/long term (6mths+).
Now back to the main game-ERMS, EARS, DRI...
