Hi Champ ,I should have explained my comment regarding FMG more clearly in hindsight .
Back in Nov 2007 ,The all ords hit a top ,and by January it was in a massive slide dropping from 8600 down to 5200 in around March ,quite a substantial drop and the GFC was clearly well under way .
During that time FMG was still in the process of being rerated due to fundamental ,stock specific achievements . While the market was getting unmercilessly hammered during this period ,FMG rose from $5.50 to $12 ,and clearly was heading in the opposite direction irrespective of the doom and gloom in the general market .
It was this, that I was referring to when I made that statement ,and my point was that if a stocks fundamentals drastically change then it is entirely possible to buck the trend .
The GFC did catch up eventually to FMG ,and it slid just like the rest ,but it was interesting to note the period where a stock was doing the opposite to the market in spectacular fashion , for around 6 months months or so .
Hope this clears up any confusion .
Even if the global economy is negative ,my view is that individual stocks can still make you lots of money if you choose carefully .
