I think the head gear makes them more vulnerable to injury. The grid iron players are padded up and wear head gear so they think they will not be injured. So they charge in using their heads in ways that bare headed players do not. I am not saying that rugby players do not get such injuries only that the rate of damage will probably be much lower than in grid iron. I first heard about this US problem while driving around there in 2009.
