Guinea has decided to tighten the conditions for exporting its bauxite by imposing the use of the Guinean flag for half (50%) of the volumes exported, reports the specialist website news.metal.com.

This decision, announced by the Minister of Mines and Geology, Bouna Sylla, is part of a stated desire to strengthen national control over the sector's value chain.

To support this measure, adds the website news.metal, the Guinean authorities have established a new shipping company: Guinéenne des Transports Maritimes (GUITRAM). It will be responsible for handling a significant portion of the transport of bauxite produced in the country, thus contributing to the country's logistical sovereignty.

In the same vein, the government has established the Guinea Bauxite Index (GBX), a benchmark tool designed to improve transparency in the local market and optimize export revenues. The introduction of this index aims to better regulate prices while allowing Guinea to better leverage its dominant position in the global bauxite market. This dynamic comes at the right time. In 2025, Guinea's bauxite exports are expected to increase by 37% compared to 2024, and by 56% compared to 2023, according to the same source. This boom propels bauxite to the rank of second largest contributor to global demand for capesize shipping, these very large capacity vessels used for bulk transport, even ahead of coal. With these measures, the Guinean authorities are clearly demonstrating their desire to capture more of the economic benefits of exploiting the country's resources, by regaining control of the strategic links in the export chain.
