Under sea cables are technically feasible.

Longest is NorNed (570km) second longest (currently) is BassLink to Tassie.

Cost about AUD2 or AUD3m per km (BassLink about 4m) for about 500 MW for short periods.

About 3 times the cost of a power station to produce the same capacity.

Shortest distance Aus-NZ is 1720km, so not really technically feasible at this stage. Would cost $AUD6.5bn to provide 300MW baseload or 500MW for short periods. I think the Kiwi's spend AUD about 140m to increase the effective size of Manapouri by about 150MW, as an indicator of how poor it would be as a power asset.

Of course, BassLink is not a power asset, it is a contribution to Tasmania.
