I think you might be referring to 'Colour Sergeant Bourne' played by Nigel Green if my memory serves me correctly.
The Zulu War of 1879 is my favorite military history, earlier that same day as set in the film an estm. 20,000 Zulus armed mainly with spears overran the British camp at Isandlwana & massacred about 1700 people in total, who had cartridge loading rifles mind you! Stunning feat.
