I played Basketball my whole life growing up in Cairns. It's a very popular sport in the town, especially with the Taipans being located there.
Streetball all depends at the time. Lot's more play in the city as opposed to the northern beaches but I am sure there would be a popular outdoor court somewhere in the Trinity area.
Your son should sign up for the mens comp at Smithfield YMCA. Nice courts and easy to get allocated to a team as a single player.
