A packer will be set above the target zone isolating it with the bottom hole. This is commonly run on on-shore operations and allows a test of the formation pre cement invasion (from setting casing).

Alternatively they may decide to wireline log first then based on the interpretation (much more reliable depth wise than mudlogging) run casing and perforate the desired zone(s).

Either way, oil/gas shows will be seen in any pre-testing case from mud logging data and must be communicated to the market as material information.
