I believe once 'humans' stop seeing themselves as 'individuals' and understand that humanity shares ONE conciousness we'll all be better off for it
BUT
that means completely dropping the ego and self interest and such a feat is something i know i will not see in this life..Unfortunately it will take a "catastrophe' of global significance to snap humanity out of its illusion.Maybe even then we'll just fight over what's left.
Like you said we could go on forever and we don't have that much time! Just ENJOY !!
