The cross - bench is mixed. Bob Day of Family First is for it as is the libertarian Liberal Democrat Party David Leyohnhelm ( spelling ? ) ; One Nation also favours amending the wording of 18c. Not sure about k Lambie but I do know for sure that Nick X's ( NXT ) and Hinch are against any reform.
The sure thing is that 18c is obnoxious ; it is a muzzle on free speech. No one has 'the right' to take offence or claim to be insulted in law ( not defamed ) and then take another to court; the fact that such ' a right ' is presently enshrined in legislation is an unjust restraint on free speech.
By way of example if a person says that there are too many Chinese getting into our country or too many Muslims, they are the possible protection of 18d notwithstanding quite liable to be sued. That is outrageous; there are plenty of people who hold the opinions above and there are numerous good arguments to support such. It is true too that most giving these opinions do not seek to offend but certainly do think what they think and ought in a free society be able to say it and ought to be heard in debate , their views contributing to discussion and policy formulation.
At present, policy on immigration matters and matters of culture and so on is in the grip of the Left because the Left has not only infiltrated our bureaucracy and our universities but also been successful in its totalitarian desire to stifle discussion and have only its ' acceptable ' opinions aired with abandon. All other opinions will be derided, scoffed at, denounced with vicious self - righteousness or indeed shut down with the threat of 18c of the RDA.
18 c will go. It may as David L. said today take time but you always have to start somewhere. It will go.
