The dark red colours on the aeromagnetic image below show the location of the magnetic iron formation in the sub-surface at Grants:
Over the weekend, I was doing some additional research in SARIG and pulled up the following 3 images over the location of the Grants iron ore deposit (1.16 km2surface area) and the Grants Iron Ore Basin (17.1 km2 surface area):
The first image is the 'Neoproterozoic Fault' basin in SARIG:
In SARIG, I selected ‘Neoproterozoic - Ordovician faults’. The thin blue line represents the Neoproterozoic fault line that encompasses the Grants Iron Ore Basin.
The second image is Total Magnetic Imagery - TMI RTP in SARIG:
The dark red colour represents the magnetic anomaly for the Grants Iron Ore Basin. It falls within the thin blue line, representing the Neoproterozoic fault line.
Variations in the Earth’s magnetic field respond to the intensity of magnetisation, which is controlled by lithological factors, principally magnetite content in the ground.
Reduction to the pole ('RTP') simulates the form that the anomalous TMI would take if the Earth's magnetic field were locally vertical, as it is at the magnetic pole, assuming that all magnetic sources are inductively magnetised.
Cooler colours (such as blue) apparently indicate lower values and warmer colours (dark red) represent increasingly higher magnetic intensity values.
The third image is Gravity UC1000 Residual - Onshore in SARIG:
The white colour represents the gravity anomaly for the Grants Iron Ore Basin. It also falls within the thin blue line, representing the Neoproterozoic fault line.
Strong positive gravity anomalies (marked by the white and orange colours on the above gravity image) apparently coincide with the areas of intense magnetism.
You can also see clearly the smaller gravity anomaly for the Grants iron ore deposit.
Given the size of both the magnetic anomaly and gravity anomaly falling within the Neoproterozoic fault line, you can appreciate why Mr Gupta is interested in the Grants Iron Ore Basin.
You can also understand why Dr Giles speaks with such passion about the Grants Iron Ore Basin at the 1.06:36 mark in the 2017 Havilah AGM video below:
The Grants Iron Ore Basin continues to be on my 'elephant' watch list.
Cheers
