If ever there's a guy worth an eye watering salary it's Alan Joyce. In the early 2000's Virgin was in the ascendancy because of Qantas's high cost base. The consensus was Qantas couldn't introduce a budget arm (Jetstar) without cannibalising the main business. Joyce got that done. Since being CEO he's run rings around the half dozen or so rivals Virgin have put up to the point where the Qantas share price increased 7 times in value in 6 years before Coronavirus, while Virgin flounders near bankruptcy. He's a rare exception: an obscenely paid CEO who appears to actually be worth every cent.
