Just a slight correction to this part.

"As each year passes, my capital gains liability is reduced, by 50% in the first year and then, I believe, 50% of the 50% for the following."

Capital gains tax is applied, at the persons marginal rate, on all realised profits. Where the asset has been held for more than 12 months, a 50% discount is applied, however this is a one time event. There is no further discounting, regardless how much longer you hold prior to divestment.
