    Very interesting.

If it's true it's the apoptosis via t-cells that is crucial, one has to wonder what the next necessary step of the pathway is.

Is it the ongoing action of the cytotoxic tcells? The activation of regulatory t-cells? The activation of downstream pathways due to the breakdown products of MSCs?

    It's very interesting stuff.

You likely wouldn't want to "activate" the MSCs prior to infusion, if it leads to apoptosis. And I strongly suspect it's not the residual apoptotic bodies of the MSCs that are causing the downstream effect but likely a result of intercellular messaging during the interaction.

    But that's just conjecture.

What would be a groundbreaking next step would be to figure out the mechanism, so one could develop a peptide/compound that would trigger that signalling system, thereby creating a simple, reliable drug that would be able to bypass the issues with stem cells themselves - the batch-batch reliability, manufacturing limitations, quality control, cost and the fact they are a human product.

MSB should really be diving into this aspect of the research as well, before some other company does.

    Good find Bazza
