I didn't know who Renaissance Technologies are (I can attest to the secretive adjective!). Thanks for bringing them to my attention. I know wikipedia is just ahead of HC in the believability stakes, but a few nuggets obtained there:
- The firm uses quantitative trading, where staff tap data in its petabyte-scale data warehouse to assess statistical probabilities for the direction of securities prices in any given market.
- secretive and consistently profitable black-box strategy
- manipulate large amounts of data by deploying scalable technological architectures for computation and execution
- [the hedge fund] has employed complex mathematical models to analyze and execute trades, many of them automated
Personally I'm not impressed that Renaissance Technologies are a fellow shareholder of any company I invest in, and it doesn't say anything about the fundamentals of MSB that they hold (are they still holding? what about now?).
