Makes more sense to own "1000" long shares. let someone borrow out x amount of shares for an interest rate and have a return schedule. That way i still have 1000 shares plus interest. The only sense I could see is a large Corporation like credit suisse holding both long and short because they are acting on behalf of their clients, not to edge their bets
