As much as I wish they could, it is difficult for MSB to help those who are dying in Victoria.
The majority have come from Aged Care Facilities that have Advance Care Directives in place. This document outlines the treatment that the person is to receive when reaching end of life. Most have chosen palliative care to keep the person comfortable and pain free and often includes no active treatment. Therefore most would choose not to use stem cells. Agreeing to take part in a trial would be remote.
I would like to think that our sick health care workers could have access to MSCs. Unfortunately, there would not be enough to run a trial. But can their family request unproven and unapproved treatment? I am unsure. I certainly will be testing the system if any of my family (currently working on the front line) end up in intensive care. Will let you all know how I go if this should eventuate.
