I have a different read on the current shorting activity.
Sophisticated investor(s)/hedge fund(s), I'm using those terms 'cos whomsoever it is that is going short are putting some serious coin at risk and we can be sure it's not your average hot copper "parcel" punter, are gambling that the share price is going to tank and will welcome a rising SP. If they're proven right they made a better return selling the shares they didn't own at higher prices. I guess that's easier when it's not your own hard-earned on the table.
As I have taken the contrary view to the shorts I'm happy to see the short interest increasing as the SP increases - it's the old coiled spring analogy and MSB is getting wound up tighter and tighter as it approaches several key inflection points. When the big news drops, and for me the short hypothesis has to be that there's going to be a major fail on the CHF readout, all that tension is going to see the SP explode or implode spectacularly. My money's firmly on the Big Bang Theory.
