Itescu believes even if a successful COVID-19 vaccine were to appear in the next 12 to 18 months there will still be a steady start of new infections every year, given mutations erupt annually.
"There are still going to be lots of these patients on respirators, and that is our target market," he says.
But as with vaccines and plasma, Itescu says there are also manufacturing challenges for Mesoblast's stem cell therapy. As it stands, the company would not be able to make enough product for the hundreds of thousands of people getting sick and admitted into the ICU due to COVID-19.
But the company has multiple prongs in the works to support scaled manufacturing.
"Over the next 12 to 24 months we are looking to scale up manufacturing in multiple facilities," he says. "At the moment we are making [products] in Singapore with our partner Lonza. We are looking to establish manufacturing in the US, through Lonza or through others. We are talking to government to support our manufacturing and [possible] pharmaceutical partners."

Also regarding other drugs on Covid-19:
