MUSC’s Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital has seen 14 children with MIS-C within the last year. The hospital is the first in the nation to try a new treatment for those with severe cases. The treatment is called remestemcel-L, currently in clinical trials as part of an expanded access program. The therapy uses mesenchymal stromal cells, which is made in the bone marrow of healthy people. So far, two patients have received the new treatment including four-year-old KJ Griffin. After visiting several healthcare providers for symptoms, the boy’s mother ended up taking him to MUSC in July where he ultimately received a diagnosis.KJ plays with nurse by window (MUSC Health).jpgDr. Allison Eckard, a pediatric infectious disease specialist, was one of the doctors who treated KJ. She said he came to the hospital in critical condition with a 105-degree fever and his heart dangerously inflamed.“He was incredibly sick when he came to MUSC. In fact, he had been to the emergency department outside of MUSC three other times with similar complaints, and providers just didn’t recognize it as MIS-C,” Eckard said. “It was pretty clear when he came to our emergency department based on his symptoms that he had MIS-C, and we started treatment right away.”She said his heart condition led them to try the new treatment, adding in order to qualify for remestemcel-L treatment, there must be evidence the patient’s heart is not functioning properly. She said in both children’s cases, the results were very promising.“Within a couple days of giving them the investigational treatment, they were ready to go home. It was just truly remarkable,” she said. “What is special about this product is that it not only treats the inflammation, but there is evidence that it actually goes to the site of the damage in the heart and the blood vessels and repairs them.”According to the Centers for Disease Control, 23 children have died nationwide from MIS-C. Eckard said luckily, all 14 of their patients made a full recovery. She hopes to bring more awareness to the condition so parents and providers can better recognize the condition. She explained MIS-C is a complication of COVID-19 and occurs after a person has recovered, knowingly or unknowingly, from the virus.CHARLESTON, SC (WCIV) — The battle against COVID-19 is ever evolving. There’s new hope for children suffering from a rare complication of COVID-19 called multisystem inflammatory syndrome, or MIS-C, a rare, but serious disease.
MUSC Children's Hospital uses new method to treat rare MIS-CO

“We’ve had kids with temperatures as high as 105 and 106, so that is a red flag. If your child has a high fever that is very uncharacteristic, if they have a rash, vomiting and diarrhea or are just not acting the way they normally act, those are all reasons to go straight to the emergency department even if you do not think the child has been exposed to COVID,” said Eckard, who added the case numbers do correlate with community COVID numbers. “There’s usually a delay of about 2-4 weeks and then we start seeing more MIS-C numbers as well, so talking about MIS-C is particularly relevant now because as our community numbers are climbing and surging we will likely see additional MIS-C cases in the coming months.”
