AEMO sharpens warnings on WA gas shortfallAngela Macdonald-SmithSenior resources writerDec 14, 2023 – 5.00amWestern Australia may need to rely on natural gas drawn from storage and LNGcargoes diverted from the export market to avert shortages in the domestic marketover the next three years, the Australian Energy Market Operator has advised.The state’s domestic gas supply is expected to run short of demand through to 2026before new projects come online to take the pressure off, but the gap would beextended if the fi elds are delayed, AEMO said in its annual outlook for the WA gasmarket.

It looks set to cement fears among some players thatWA is heading for the type of crisis in domestic gas that has plagued the easternstates in recent years and driven up prices.WA’s defi cit in gas supply is expected to return and widen from 2030 onwards,driven by the shutdown of coal power stations and declining output from fi elds.Those factors will only partly be offset by higher wind and solar power andemissions reduction efforts, AEMO said.Over the next decade, WA’s demand for gas is expected to increase by 2.2 per centevery year, far outstripping a forecast 0.9 per cent annual decline in supply.

AEMO pointed to many offshore and onshore undeveloped fi elds that could fi ll thegap, but its executive general manager for WA and strategy, Kate Ryan, said theywere too speculative to include in the base-case forecast.
