They have been followed by the original doctor- over years . There is a published journal article , last ~ 2016/17 related to their original dire illness (AML -refractory , they both relapsed multiple times ) and treatments and bisantrene regime , after which they achieved CR & gradually got to being cured .

In trials including in the USA - dozens of children achieved a CR with bisantrene after dire R/R AML ( a particularly difficult to cure , nasty leukaemia ) . We don’t know how many of these children may be alive , if they could receive and survive a bone marrow transplant back then.
Back then - to have an exact matching bone marrow donor available was the patients only ultimate hope for survival , which truly had to be a direct sibling and there is only a % chance that each of ones siblings might be an exact match for you in type of bone marrow .
So it was harrowing. The girls were very sick over several years , blood transfusions constantly, horror treatment which didn’t work and then relapses again .
The ultimate miracle was that these two alone - were able to receive healthy bone marrow transplantation from a sibling ( also a big deal for the families ) , and survived that & made it .

True story . Can understand why and how they came to know the doctor so well as they were then followed up as cancer surviving patients are, and the years turned into decades happily . The original doctor kept in touch.
