Harmony's only interest in Mt Magnet was as a bridge to get to Papua New Guinea, it was indeed a very lucky bridge with the Hill 50 mine being discovered.

The truth was there is a restriction on mining in PNG set by the government in which you need to be an Australian/ Commonwealth based company before any mining approval will be given. Harmony mined Mount Magnet solely for access to the highest grade gold mines the world has seen at PNG.
They are producing averages of 500,000 tonnes of AU/oz Per Quarter with less than half the costs Australia has (labour). https://ramumine.wordpress.com/tag/harmony-gold/
