Malcolm Turnbull turns up heat on gas chiefs
AUSTRALIA’S gas giants have agreed to make more gas available to the domestic market “as soon as possible” after crisis talks with the Prime Minister.
Malcolm Turnbull announced the commitment today after an hour-long meeting with the heads of Santos, Shell, ExxonMobil and several other industry representatives.
The Prime Minister also announced a joint agreement between the federal government to step up pressure on NSW and Victoria to end the moratorium on onshore gas exploration.
Gas market reforms already in the works would also be accelerated and the industry would be made more transparent, Mr Turnbull said.
Another high-level meeting is scheduled for next month.
“We are a massive gas exporter,” Mr Turnbull said.
“It is utterly untenable, unacceptable, for us to be in a position where domestic gas consumers — whether it’s generators, whether it’s businesses and industry, or whether it’s families — cannot have access to affordable gas.”
