    Headie,

    Keating almost ruined my parents in the 80s with his 18% interest rates (they struggled like mad to pay the mortgage at that time). I was lucky to have / get a job when unemployment was 10%+ thanks to the 'recession we had to have'. Many of my mates missed out on a job. My parents aren't rich either - they are doing fine - not wondering where their next crust is coming from (possibly like yours) - they don't need government handouts.

    In my opinion thats what welfare should be for - people who aren't fine and in serious financial distress. Anything else should be cut - the $40B annual fiscal structural deficit is unsustainable.
