I think you are all confusing the issues here. Mugabe is a dictator not liked by the majority of his own people. He is hanging on to power by playing the race game and persecuting his own people in the process.
As for white influence.... well, ask the starving unemployed blacks who formerly were doing ok relatively. How many of them had in mind a career choice of starvation and insecurity due to a breakdown of law and order?
Mugabe is a villain, just like the rest of Africa's despots. He is following a fine tradition of amassing power for himself and shafting his people.... a chimpanzee in a suit.
