There was one girl a year below me at school who was affected by thalidomide. She had a short arm with a useless vestige of a hand. Thought that she was lucky as her disability was minimal, however she died as a result of the thalidomide in her late 30's or early 40's due to organ failure. Thalidomide also caused a lot of problems internally as well as externally which never seems to get mentioned in the media and which I was ignorant of until this young woman lost her life so early.
