Multi-million dollar project to change U.S. 60, I-24 exit 4 Paducah interchange begins soon

PADUCAH — Heads up, drivers: A construction project will begin soon at the exit many of you use to get to Kentucky Oaks Mall in Paducah and many other businesses.
A construction project to change the configuration of the Interstate 24 exit 4 Paducah interchange along U.S. 60 will begin Monday, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says.
Jim Smith Contracting of Grand Rivers, Kentucky, is the main contractor on the $9,179,425 project, the cabinet says in a news release sent Thursday.
A contractor hired by the cabinet will start construction March 4 on a double crossover diamond interchange project at the location, KYTC says. The construction zone will extend to New Holt Road. Signs will go up this week. The cabinet says the highway improvement project is expected to be completed by November.
First, a barrier wall will be installed down the U.S. 60 center turn lane from Holt Road to the interchange. KYTC says left turns will only be allowed at intersections where signals are set up. There will be no left turn from U.S. 60 east to northbound Holt Road.
At first, work will generally be done at night, but KYTC says some daytime and weekend work may be required. Drivers can expect lane restrictions at different spots along the project, but KYTC says one lane will be open at all times. Crews will put up signs to guide drivers.
KYTC says once the project is finished, the new layout of the intersection will help shorten delays by getting rid of a phase at each traffic signal and reducing the number of left turns.
“Once completed, a non-mountable median will eliminate turns,” KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says. “This should pretty much eliminate crashes on this section.  That will be good news for our partners in the Paducah Police Department.
