    OK, to finish the thread, here is the outcome.
    The headmaster investigated and deemed the question, the focus on aslylum seekers, and the method in which the children were engaged wholly innapropriate. He immediately cancelled the lesson going ahead in two grades about to do it, called a meeting of the young and probably well meaning but inexperienced teachers together, and explained that the focus for the inquiry this term would be put back onto 'multiculturalism' (ie. a focus on the different nationalities that make up Australia today, how they got here, food etc..), and explained that sometimes it IS appropriate to do old fashioned listen and learn type teaching.
    So, outcome good. I am glad I went and raised the matter with him directly.
