I take note of the traffic further ahead, if the car in front of me is travelling too close to the car ahead of them there potetial for me to be involved in a rear ender is greater. The last car in a trail of rear enders is held at fault for the others ie, I stopped in time but the car behind me shunted me into the car ahead. Difficult to prove that was not the case
