Yeah that sounds about right. Netflix spent 7 years building their platform with these types of features back when there biggest competitor was Blockbuster. Management at Blockbuster had no idea about the personalization that was happening for every individual user when they signed into the service and they paid something like $30m to a team of developers to copy the Netflix portal. The developers built a look-a-like portal quite easily however it lacked the sophisticated algorithms to customize content based on a users interests. This is one of the key reasons why Netflix lasted so long without having the quality content that it has today.

It's amazing how dependent we become on services when those service build themselves around you.
