I get what you're saying, but it's implied by the boxers that when the ref interveins by trying to separate them, they break.
It's similar to someone putting their glove out to touch gloves and the other one snotting them in the mouth.
It's just not sportsmanlike IMO.
IMO it was a cheap shot.
