More focus on SLSA, might bode well for Data-incrypt in some way.....Will get some points for their support at least.....Very handy SYDNEY, Oct 16 AAP - Lachlan Murdoch hopes to protect his own family's beach lifestyle by throwing his weight behind Surf Life Saving Australia's (SLSA) Major Gift Appeal. As chairman of the appeal, Mr Murdoch hopes to help raise $20 million to establish a financial legacy that will meet the ongoing needs of the organisation. He left his New York-based role at News Corp last year and returned to his beachside home in Sydney's Bronte with wife Sarah and their children. Mr Murdoch said his own concerns as father to a young family made him realise the importance of beach safety, and of supporting the SLSA. "Along with millions of Australians, my family will be heading to the beach this summer," he said in a statement. "As a father of two young children, I recognise the importance of beach safety. "However, if we want our beaches to remain guarded for generations to come, we must secure the organisation's future." The federal government recently announced next year would be the Year of the Surf Lifesaver, commemorating 100 years since the establishment of the first Surf Life Saving Association. SLSA will use the year to educate and inform Australians about its work, including holding promotional events and improving water safety education for children. Mr Murdoch says it's important to get behind the organisation, whose 37,000 volunteer lifesavers rescued more than 10,000 people last year, taking the number of lives saved since the formation of the original surf lifesaving association to 520,000. "With very little fuss or fanfare, Surf Living Saving Australia provides a vital service to Australia," Mr Murdoch said. "They are an essential part of Australian culture and we should all be extremely proud of the fantastic work they do. "I welcome the launch of this appeal and urge all Australians to contribute." Mr Murdoch is being supported by an advisory committee which includes SLSA president Ron Rankin. Mr Rankin said it was important for the association to receive financial backing to ensure it was able to continue its work. "Surf lifesavers have been keeping the country's beaches safe for almost one hundred years and many people assume that they will keep doing so for the next century," Mr Rankin said. "We are very grateful for the level of support we currently receive from government, the corporate sector and members of the public. "However, the costs of providing beach and water safety services continue to outstrip our ability to raise funds, which is why the contribution of Mr Murdoch and the advisory board is so timely and so important."
