Julia Gillard last week claimed that the Peabody Energy and ArcelorMittal bid for Macarthur Coal (MCC) was proof her carbon tax was not an issue to mining. Not quite right: the takeover is motivated by the squeeze on coking coal supplies and the expectation of a substantial deficit by 2020 -- the same reasoning behind the recent acquisition of Riversdale Mining.

What with the imminent carbon impost and the looming mining tax, no wonder coal exploration in Mongolia, Mozambique and Indonesia seems so attractive.
