Muslim leader Keysar Trad tells Andrew Bolt violence against women is 'last resort'

A controversial Muslim community leader has said violence towards women should be a "last resort".
President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils Keysar Trad appeared on Sky News last night when host Andrew Bolt brought up domestic violence.
The presenter quoted from the Koran, saying "It is permissible for him (husbands) to beat her (the wife) light with his hands".

"Violence is a last resort," Trad responded.
"Before you even consider using your hand before you consider any act of violence have you checked box number one, which is counselling. Have you checked box number two?
"What does does counselling entail? Maybe next time you should bring her a bunch of flowers. Maybe you next time you should bring her a box of chocolates. Maybe next time you should take her out for a dinner."
Bolt interjected to say "and beat her, if she still doesn't see sense beat her, that's what this says".
Trad responded that a "good person would never get to that step because the first step would eliminate the problem".
Trad has long been a controversial figure in the Islamic community, and has made multiple statements espousing the benefits of polygamy.
He also fought a lengthy defamation case with radio station 2GB, which he lost and had to pay substantial court costs, The Australian reports.

If one holds a view a man can beat a wife when she doesn’t submit to HIS standards then he is a bloody crim idiot
just like the other Aussie crim idiots who not only beat their wives in Australia but at rate of on average one a week is killed by an Australian male. Some Australian men from all areas of society simply have not evolved sufficiently to be decent human beings it seems.

You like I must be mortified Pints that there may be some Muslims who apparently use religion as justification to in some cases administer corporal punishment on women. Also, I guess you like I would be absolutely horrified at the massive number of non Muslim Australian men who believe its OK to bash their wives/partners. They don’t even have a religion as a fullback excuse to do it and yet in Australia its an epidemic of massive proportions. Have I assessed your view correctly?

All violence not in self defence is a criminal act in Australia and all perpetrators deserve application of the full force of the law. Hopefully education and penalties will improve the situation over time.
