Depends on what you call the 'fundamentals' of islam.

Original Islam supports tolerance of Jews and Christians. It supports pluralism, democracy and prosperity. It is pluralistic, non-conformist and allows for a multiplicity of opinions.

Wahhabism (from the 18th Century break away al-Wahhab) is against all of Original Islam. Wahhabism was the political/economic method used to wrest territory back from the Ottoman empire. Only 2 islamic countries are fully Wahhabist, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Pakistan has had some threats which are being quashed. Afghanistan is a quarry. Qatar appears to be in reverse on the issue. Saudi is still the main one, and Saudi is so closely intertwined with Washington that it will take a big event to break that grip. US oil men support and work with Saudis, to their mutual benefit.

Saudi are the big supporters of Hammas, and are also the main suppliers of fuel to the US. The US are totally dependant on cheap fuel to run their cars. Osama bin laden is Saudi born and wants to destroy the current government.

It was a Saudi funded operation that resulted in 9/11.

The war in Iraq is the first stage in breaking the grip that Saudis have on the US. The US will be able to use Iraq as an alternative source of energy. It will be a 'win win' situation for both Iraq and the USA.

It will also to break Wahhabism, a threat to all arab nations, by destabilising Saudi. This will help stop terrorism, a Wahhabist tactic (the arabs fight man to man not with bombs on buses)

It will also clip the wings of Hammas, and cool down the Israelis.

Of course it could all change tomorrow, but thats showbiz.
