Muslim community leaders react to terror plot with 'disgust and despair'
The Islamic community has reacted angrily to the news of a
planned terror act in Melbourne.
Islamic community worker Mo Elleissy told Nick McCallum the community feels "disgust and despair".
Mr Elleissy said there are three key risk factors that can indicate a person could be radicalised:
- They follow the Salafi branch of Islam
- They are under the age of 25
- They have a criminal history
He said he works with young Muslims at risk of radicalisation.
"It's a shame that their only understanding of non-Muslims is Pauline Hanson and Cory Bernardi," he said.
"We try to show that Australia is a beautiful country and that they shouldn't focus on those negatives.
"We try to broaden their horizons. Quite often, they live in a bubble and they're only exposed to a certain worldview."
Mr Elleissy said community leaders feel frustrated that their voices have been ignored.
"We've been condemning and offering solutions for almost a decade," he said.
