There has been a sharp increase in the brutality of violent crime in Thailand's troubled southern provinces, where an Islamic insurgency is under way.

In the latest attack, a businessman was beheaded in front of customers in a roadside restaurant.

In a very public execution, a 34-year-old victim was shot twice before his head was cut off in front of three customers.

It brings to five the number of people who have been beheaded in southern Thailand in just the last three weeks and eight in total since the uprising began in January last year.

It comes amid a general increase in the number of anonymous leaflets left at crime scenes, calling for a jihad or holy war.

The sudden surge in beheading murders marks a brutal change of tactics in the unrest.

Most of the more than 700 people killed during the troubles have died in bomb attacks or drive-by shootings.
