    Inpex keeps eye on prize

    NIGEL ADLAM

    September 9th, 2009

THE building of a gas hub on the Kimberley coast won't affect Darwin's $12 billion gas project, the Northern Territory News was told yesterday.

Japanese resources company Inpex is expected to make a final investment decision on laying an undersea pipeline 850km from its Ichthys field to a LNG plant in Darwin next year.

The decision was originally scheduled early in the year but it now seems likely it may not be taken until mid-year.

The WA Government has come to an agreement with energy company Woodside to bring gas from near Ichthys to James Price Point onthe Kimberley coast.

The new hub would be much closer to the Inpex field than Darwin and there were fears that the company would try to piggyback on the deal. But an industry source said the LNG plant would be built in Darwin.

"The reasons why Inpex chose Darwin in the first place are just as sound and economically reasonable as they were then. Nothing has changed," the source said.

The new Liberal WA Government says it has not given up on trying to lure Inpex away from Darwin.

But the source said: "The WA Government can't organise late-nightshopping hours.

"Do you honestlythink Inpex would trust itwith a multibillion-dollargas investment?"

The Inpex project will be discussed at a major oil and gas conference in Darwin.

The South-East Asia Australia Offshore Conference is being held from this morning until Friday at the Darwin Conference Centre. It is the latest in a string of big resources conferences held in the Northern Territory.

    Speakers will include:

JOHN Anderson of Santos, which wants to build a multibillion-dollar floating processing platform at the Petrel, Tern and Frigate oil and gas fields off the Northern Territory coast.

JOE Marushack of ConocoPhillips, which operates Darwin's LNG plant.

VIVEK Chandra of Nexus Energy, a company set up partly by Territory businessmen and which is trying to develop a gas field north-west of Darwin.

JURGEN Hendrich of MEO Australia, which wantsto develop two gas fieldsat Tassie Shoal, 275kmfrom Darwin.
