If a company can buyback their preference shares then they could pay their coupons. Very simple.
Remember their no. 1 responsibility is their shareholders and paying their dividend.
If BBI is too busy stuffing around trying to screw their pref holders (who probably wouldn't even participate in a buyback if BBI was in such a position to buy them back) THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PAY DIVIDENDS, THEIR NUMBER 1 PRIORITY.
