May be that you have a program running in the background, such as Norton doing a weekly scan of your HDD, or as happens with one of my HP laptops, the system is performing a HDD recovery backup scan.
Either should be apparent by HDD activity being noticeable.
Failing that, try running a few ping tests and/or a download speed test.
