my mother has just been scammed, page-24

If it will cheer your mother up, Fluffy, she might like to have a look at "Insight" SBS, 8.30 pm this evening, where many people have been scammed out of hundreds of thousands of dollars via online dating sites.

The people concerned were middle aged and older. I just can't understand how they could have been sucked into sending money to someone they have never met, not even spoken to on the phone, and who claim to urgently need the money via Western Union for some fatuous sounding reason, as soon as a couple of weeks after making online contact.

I know some people are really lonely and looking for a relationship, but surely one's common sense is going to signal "this is a giant scam"?

(Not at all suggesting your mother had any similar reason to suspect anything wrong, fluffy, but next time hopefully she'll book through a travel agent so she has some comeback if something goes wrong.)
