    Lieutenant James Cook landed at several places along the eastern Australian and New Zealand coastlines, carefully mapping both during his first major voyage in 1768-1771. That is his legacy for Australia; he was later promoted but never returned.

    If there was any invasion it was started by Arthur Philip, who arrived with marines and convicts to establish a penal colony in 1788.
