Chippy - try again - I am just about to have another checkup and maybe a new prescription for my now aging eyes. I had good eyes well into my early fifties (despite always having had jobs that involved hours at the computer, lots of reading etc.) - first glasses at 54 - and now I find it a real nuisance to have to have glasses, still try to do without for my daily tasks round the house and garden, even driving.
From what you say, you most likely should have your eyes checked by an eye surgeon, but go the classic route: GP - eye specialist - surgeon, if necessary.
There is always something new out there - check it out. I know what you mean about eyes being important. I adore reading, love colour, paintings, nature, people and I would simply die if I couldn't see - but "I could die" is easier said than done - people adjust all the time to the worst things and conditions that happen to them and keep on living, often with joy. Your story is a good example, except I think you are going through a rough patch right now - don't let it get any worse, do something about it.
Something else has occurred to me - you can actually 'eat to help your eyes' - and general health as well. Things like fish (salmon, tuna - fatty fish actually - Omega 3) yellow vegetables and fruit, sunflower kernels, almonds, citrus and berry fruit, egg (yolks), green leaf vegetables all help to keep your eyes and you healthy.
Go well
