If it is face value that we should be using, then it sounds like you haven't had a read of the transcript of Mallinckrodt's result presentation and ensuing Q&A?
Not much sign of any concerns on the part of MNK executives about having to urgently innovate, or else face an imminent demise of the company.
In fact, the transcript is punctuated with several meaningful votes of confidence in their existing product suite.
Sounded very much like business-as-usual to me; certainly zero evidence of planning for Kodak, Fuji or Nokia type scenarios.
(Of course, while there is nothing like a few helpings of unsubstantiated histrionics to emphasise a point, that approach doesn't quite fit in with your "taking things at face value".)
